Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Ground Beef and Gravy Over Mashed Potatoes Recipe

Ground beef in a brown onion gravy, spooned over mashed potatoes, is a plain and filling supper with very little to wash up.

The beef browns first and comes out of the skillet, leaving a little fat behind to soften the onion and garlic. Flour sprinkled over the onions and stirred for a minute is what will thicken the gravy, and that brief cooking takes away its raw taste. The beef broth goes in gradually, with whisking, so no lumps form, and Worcestershire adds depth. For me, plenty of black pepper in the gravy is a must.

Once the beef returns, the gravy simmers until it thickens. Four cups of mashed potatoes, leftover, homemade or store-bought, make the base, with fresh parsley on top if you like.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Remove the beef from the skillet, leaving a bit of fat behind. Add onion and garlic to the skillet, cooking until fragrant and translucent, about 3-4 minutes.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and garlic, stirring constantly for about 1 minute.
  4. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps form. Bring to a simmer and add the Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  5. Return the ground beef to the skillet, stirring to combine. Let it simmer for 5-10 minutes or until the gravy thickens.
  6. Serve the beef and gravy mixture over a bed of mashed potatoes, garnished with fresh parsley if desired.
