  • Author: Dorothy Miller

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 cups of day-old bread, cubed
  • 4 cups of milk
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 cup of raisins (optional)
  • 1/4 cup of butter, melted
  • For the Vanilla Sauce:
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1/2 cup of butter
  • 1/2 cup of heavy cream
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, soak the bread cubes in milk for about 10 minutes.
  3. In another bowl, whisk together the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and nutmeg until well combined. Stir in the raisins if using.
  4. Pour this mixture over the soaked bread and gently stir to combine. Pour everything into the prepared baking dish.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top and bake for 45 minutes or until the custard is set and the top is golden brown.
  6. For the vanilla sauce, combine sugar, butter, and cream in a small saucepan. Cook over medium heat until the butter is melted, and the sugar is dissolved. Stir in vanilla extract.
  7. Serve the bread pudding warm, with the vanilla sauce drizzled over the top.
