Slow Cooker Cracker Barrel Fried Apples
- 6 large tart apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp, peeled, cored, and sliced)
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (cut into pieces)
- ½ cup packed light brown sugar
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 teaspoons lemon juice
- ¼ cup apple cider or water
- Optional: ½ teaspoon vanilla extract (for extra depth)
- Prepare the apples:
- Peel, core, and slice the apples into ½-inch thick slices. Add them to your slow cooker.
- Mix the coating:
- In a small bowl, whisk together brown sugar, granulated sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
- Combine everything:
- Sprinkle the sugar mixture over the apples. Add butter pieces evenly on top. Drizzle with lemon juice and apple cider (or water).
- Slow cook:
- Cover and cook on LOW for 2 hours, stirring once halfway through, until the apples are tender but not mushy.
- Thicken the sauce:
- If you prefer a thicker glaze, remove the lid for the last 15–20 minutes of cooking. Stir gently until the sauce coats the apples well.
- Optional finish:
- Stir in the vanilla extract at the end for a rich, bakery-style flavor.
