Halloween Spooky Bento Box

A playful no-candy Halloween lunch featuring mummy hot dogs, ghost cheese, and jack-o’-lantern fruit arranged in a compartmentalized bento box.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 beef hot dogs, boiled or pan-seared
  • 1 sheet refrigerated crescent dough
  • 2 mozzarella string cheese sticks
  • Mini chocolate chips or nori strips (for eyes)
  • 1 cup cooked white rice
  • 1 small clementine or orange, peeled and segmented
  • 1 green grape (for pumpkin stem)
  • 1/2 cup black grapes or blueberries
  • 1/2 cucumber, sliced into rounds
  • 2 tbsp hummus or ranch dip, for a small dip cup
  • 1 sheet nori (seaweed), cut into small shapes
  • A few crackers cut into small ghost or bat shapes with a cookie cutter

Instructions

  1. Cut the crescent dough into thin strips. Wrap each hot dog with strips, leaving a gap near the top for the ‘face,’ and bake according to the crescent dough package directions until golden. Let cool slightly, then add two mini chocolate chips or tiny nori dots as eyes to make mummy dogs.
  2. Cut each string cheese stick in half. Use a small knife to gently pinch and shape the top into a rounded ghost silhouette, then use a toothpick dipped in melted chocolate (or tiny nori scraps) to add ghost eyes and a mouth.
  3. Pack the cooked rice into one compartment of the bento box and press a nori shape (a bat, spider, or moon) on top for decoration.
  4. Arrange clementine segments in a circle to resemble a pumpkin, tucking a small piece of green grape or a sliver of cucumber skin in the center as the stem.
  5. Fill a small dip cup with hummus or ranch and nestle it into the box, surrounding it with cucumber rounds and cracker shapes for dipping.
  6. Fill any remaining gaps with black grapes or blueberries to look like little spiders or eyeballs, then close the lid and refrigerate until ready to pack for lunch.

Notes

Swap in whatever’s in your fridge — this halloween bento box is endlessly adaptable. For nut- or dairy-free versions, use sunbutter and dairy-free cheese alternatives. Pack with a small ice pack if not eaten within 2 hours, and keep dip separate until serving to prevent sogginess.
