Ultimate Mashed Potatoes

Creamy, smooth mashed potatoes made by boiling potatoes with garlic and salt, then mashed with butter and warm milk for the ultimate comfort side dish.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 3 cloves garlic, peeled
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks), cut into pieces
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup warm whole milk

Instructions

  1. Place the peeled and cut potatoes, garlic cloves, and 1 tablespoon salt in a large pot.
  2. Cover with cold water by about 2 inches and bring to a boil over medium-high heat.
  3. Reduce the heat and simmer until potatoes are very tender, about 20-25 minutes.
  4. Drain the potatoes and garlic well and return them to the pot.
  5. Using a potato masher or ricer, mash the potatoes and garlic until smooth.
  6. Slowly add the cubed unsalted butter in handfuls, stirring continuously to incorporate the butter into the potatoes; continue until all butter is melted and mixed in.
  7. Add warm whole milk in splashes, stirring to achieve desired creamy consistency.
  8. Adjust salt if needed and serve warm.

Notes

Use warm milk to help keep the potatoes hot and absorb better. Adding butter slowly and stirring helps emulsify for creamier texture. Garlic cooked with potatoes adds a subtle flavor without overpowering.
