  • Author: Dorothy Miler

Description

A comforting and indulgent dish combining crispy sour cream and onion chips with golden hash browns, all smothered in a rich cheesy French onion cream sauce.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Crust:

  • 1 bag (8 oz) sour cream and onion potato chips
  • 2 cups frozen diced hash browns, thawed
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp paprika

Instructions

1. Prepare the Crust:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×9 inch baking dish.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, melt butter and sauté diced onion until translucent (about 5 minutes). Add garlic and cook for 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Add hash browns to the skillet and cook for 5-7 minutes until lightly browned. Remove from heat.
  4. In a saucepan over medium heat, warm the heavy cream. Gradually whisk in Gruyere and mozzarella cheeses until melted and smooth. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper, and paprika.
  5. Layer half the potato chips in the prepared baking dish. Top with the hash brown mixture, then pour the cheese sauce evenly over everything.
  6. Bake for 15-20 minutes until bubbly. Top with remaining chips and bake for 5 more minutes until chips are lightly golden.
  7. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.
