Sloppy Joe Casserole

A comforting casserole combining seasoned ground beef with a rich tomato sauce topped with a cheesy biscuit-like topping, baking to a bubbly, hearty dish perfect for family dinners.

  • 1.5 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 large white onion, diced
  • 1 large green bell pepper, diced
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 3 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 large egg
  • 3/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned.
  3. Add the diced onion and bell pepper and sauté until tender, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, dry mustard, and garlic salt.
  5. Add tomato sauce and ketchup, stir well and let mixture simmer over low heat.
  6. For the topping, in a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
  7. Stir in milk, melted butter, and egg until just combined.
  8. Fold in shredded cheddar cheese into the topping mixture.
  9. Spread the meat mixture evenly in a casserole dish.
  10. Spoon or spread the biscuit topping evenly over the meat mixture.
  11. Bake in preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, or until topping is golden and set.

Notes

Let the sloppy joe mixture simmer to deepen flavors before topping. Use freshly shredded cheddar for best melt and texture. This casserole can be paired with a side salad for a full meal.
