Ultimate Salisbury Steak with Mushroom Gravy

A classic comfort food featuring seasoned ground beef patties cooked to perfection and smothered in a rich, savory mushroom gravy.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 egg
  • 3 tablespoons crushed buttery round cracker crumbs
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup chopped onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine ground beef, egg, cracker crumbs, finely chopped onion, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined.
  2. Form the mixture into 4 oval-shaped patties.
  3. Heat 1 tablespoon olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add patties and cook until browned on both sides, about 4 minutes per side. Remove patties and set aside.
  4. In the same skillet, add remaining 1 tablespoon olive oil. Sauté sliced mushrooms and chopped onion until softened, about 5 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and onions, stirring constantly for 1-2 minutes to cook the flour.
  6. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until the gravy thickens.
  7. Return the patties to the skillet, spooning gravy over them. Simmer for 10 minutes until patties are cooked through and flavors meld.
  8. Serve hot with mushroom gravy spooned over the steaks.

Notes

For best results, do not overmix the beef mixture to keep patties tender. Use fresh mushrooms for a richer gravy flavor. This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables.
