Orange Cookies Recipe – Soft, Citrus Dessert Delight

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour (255g)
  • 1¼ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar (150g)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened (113g)
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest (about 2 oranges)
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup fresh orange juice (120ml)
  • 1 cup confectioners’ sugar (120g)
  • Zest of 1/2 orange
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons fresh orange juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper for easy cleanup.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. This will ensure the cookies bake evenly and rise properly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the granulated sugar, butter, and orange zest. Mix on medium speed for about 3 minutes until the mixture is light and fluffy. This step is crucial for giving the cookies their soft texture.
  4. Crack in the egg and continue beating until fully combined. The mixture should be smooth at this point.
  5. With the mixer on low, gradually add the flour mixture, alternating with the fresh orange juice. Continue mixing until everything is just combined. Be careful not to overmix, as this can make the cookies dense.
  6. Use a tablespoon or cookie scoop to form balls of dough, placing them about 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. This spacing ensures they have room to spread while baking.
  7. Bake one sheet at a time for 10 minutes, or until the centers of the cookies appear dry and the edges are firm. Once baked, let them cool on the sheet for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  8. While the cookies cool, whisk together the confectioners’ sugar, orange zest, orange juice, and melted butter in a small bowl. The glaze should be smooth and easy to spread.
  9. Once the cookies are cool, spread a small amount of glaze over each one. Let them sit for about 20 minutes until the glaze is fully set. Enjoy!
