Hasselback Sweet Potatoes

Beautifully sliced and baked sweet potatoes that are crispy on the top and soft inside. A visually impressive side dish that pairs perfectly with holiday meals or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large sweet potatoes
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Wash the sweet potatoes thoroughly. Peel them 3/4 of the way, leaving some peel on the bottom for stability during slicing.
  3. Using a sharp knife, slice each sweet potato crosswise at 1/4-inch intervals, making sure not to cut all the way through. Place a wooden spoon or chopstick alongside the potato as a guide to prevent cutting through.
  4. Place the potatoes on the baking sheet. Brush generously with olive oil, then sprinkle with salt and pepper. If desired, gently fan out the slices.
  5. Bake for about 40–45 minutes, or until the slices start to soften and crisp.
  6. Remove from oven. Drizzle with melted butter and, if desired, maple syrup and a sprinkle of cinnamon. Return to oven for 5–10 minutes to caramelize the glaze, then serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, try adding a little smoked paprika or your favorite dried herbs. The syrup and cinnamon add sweetness and warmth, ideal for holiday meals. For a savory twist, omit the syrup and cinnamon and top with chopped fresh herbs or grated Parmesan cheese.
