Classic Green Bean Casserole

A classic Thanksgiving side dish made with green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and crispy fried onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound fresh or frozen green beans, trimmed and cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 cup cream of mushroom soup
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 1/2 cups French-fried onions

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F.
  2. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the green beans until tender but still crisp. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, sauté the chopped onion in butter until softened.
  4. In a separate mixing bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, salt, and pepper. Stir well.
  5. Add the cooked green beans and sautéed onions to the soup mixture. Mix until combined.
  6. Pour the mixture into a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle the French-fried onions evenly over the top of the casserole.
  8. Bake for about 25 minutes, or until the onions are golden brown.

Notes

For a crispy top, ensure the onions are evenly spread and bake until golden. You can also use fresh green beans if available. This dish is a classic Thanksgiving side that pairs well with turkey and mashed potatoes.
