Southern Fried Apples

Fresh apple slices sautéed in butter, brown sugar, and warm spices until tender and caramelized, a classic Southern treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 crisp apples such as Granny Smith
  • 3 tbsp salted butter
  • 1/4 cup light brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Cut the apples into quarters and remove the cores but do not peel them. Slice each quarter lengthwise into 3 or 4 thick slices.
  2. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  3. Add the apple slices to the skillet and turn them with a spatula to coat with butter.
  4. Optionally cover with a lid for a couple of minutes to steam and cook faster, or leave uncovered to brown slowly.
  5. Cook until apples are soft, about 10 minutes.
  6. Sprinkle the brown sugar over the apples and turn them to coat both sides.
  7. Sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg on top and stir gently.
  8. When apples are caramelized and fragrant, squeeze lemon juice over the top and serve hot.

Notes

Covering the apples while cooking steams them for faster softening, but leaving them uncovered allows for a lovely golden brown caramelization. Adjust spices and sugar to taste.
