Easy French Onion Soup

A comforting and flavorful soup made with caramelized onions, savory beef broth, and topped with toasted bread and melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, sliced 1/4-inch thick
  • 2 pressed garlic cloves
  • 2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth
  • 1 (10 1/2 ounce) can beef consomme
  • 1 dash Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices toasted French bread

Instructions

  1. Place onions and butter in a saucepan. Sauté on medium heat until onions are tender.
  2. Add garlic and sauté 1-2 minutes (do not let garlic burn).
  3. Add beef broth, consomme, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil for 1 minute.
  4. Place 1/8 cup of cheese in the bottom of each ovenproof bowl.
  5. Ladle soup into bowls, top with a slice of toasted French bread, and sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
  6. Broil until cheese is melted and bubbly.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use Gruyere or provolone cheese. You can substitute beef consomme with additional beef broth if needed. Serve immediately for best results.
