Classic Mac and Cheese

A rich and creamy classic macaroni and cheese made with a smooth cheese sauce and tender elbow macaroni, perfect for comforting meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 ounces elbow macaroni
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 3 ounces cream cheese
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Cook elbow macaroni according to package instructions until al dente; drain and set aside.
  2. In a saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for about 1 minute to form a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in whole milk and bring to a simmer, whisking constantly until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add cream cheese and stir until melted and incorporated.
  5. Season the sauce with salt and pepper.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in 2 cups of shredded cheddar cheese until melted and smooth.
  7. Combine the cheese sauce with the cooked macaroni, mixing well.
  8. Serve immediately or bake with additional cheese on top if desired.

Notes

Adding cream cheese gives the sauce a tangy richness that balances the sharp cheddar. For extra creaminess, use whole milk and avoid overcooking the pasta to keep it tender.
