Classic Lasagna

A traditional Italian-American lasagna featuring layers of noodles, beef ragu, and a blend of ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses baked to perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 pound Italian sausage
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (24-ounce) jar marinara or spaghetti sauce
  • 1 (15-ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 9 lasagna noodles, cooked and drained
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook ground beef, Italian sausage, and onion until browned; drain excess fat.
  3. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Stir in marinara sauce and simmer for 10-15 minutes to blend flavors; remove from heat.
  5. In a bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, parsley, half of the mozzarella, Parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper.
  6. Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  7. Layer 3 lasagna noodles over the sauce.
  8. Spread one-third of the ricotta mixture over noodles, then one-fourth of the meat sauce.
  9. Repeat layering two more times, ending with a layer of noodles topped with the remaining meat sauce.
  10. Cover with foil and bake for 40-45 minutes until noodles are tender.
  11. Remove foil, sprinkle with remaining mozzarella cheese, and bake uncovered for an additional 10 minutes.
  12. Optional: Broil for 2 minutes to brown the cheese on top.
  13. Let lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

Using oven-ready noodles can simplify preparation. Letting the lasagna rest after baking helps it set and reduces excess liquid. You can add spinach or substitute part of the beef with sausage for extra flavor.
