Chocolate Snowball Cookies

Rich, fudgy chocolate snowball cookies with a crackled, snowy powdered sugar topping. These chewy treats are perfect for the holidays and are almost too pretty to eat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 ounces chopped dark chocolate or 1 cup dark chocolate chips
  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ⅓ cup cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ tsp baking powder
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ½ cup butter, softened
  • ½ cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ⅔ cup confectioners’ sugar (powdered sugar), plus more for rolling

Instructions

  1. Melt chocolate in a heatproof bowl set over simmering water or in the microwave at 60% power in 30-second intervals. Stop when chocolate is 80% melted and stir to finish melting. Set aside and cool to room temperature.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  3. With an electric mixer on medium-high speed, beat butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, then vanilla and melted chocolate.
  4. Reduce mixer speed to low and beat in flour mixture until combined. Chill dough until firm.
  5. Preheat oven to 375°F. Scoop tablespoonfuls of dough and roll between your palms to form smooth balls.
  6. Roll each ball in powdered sugar and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  7. Bake for 10 minutes or until cookies are set. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, use high-quality dark chocolate. Cookies can be rolled in powdered sugar again after cooling for a more snowy appearance. Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
