Baked Ziti

A classic, comforting Italian-American casserole with ziti pasta, rich tomato sauce, ground beef, and plenty of melted cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ziti pasta
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) jar marinara sauce
  • 1 (15 ounce) container ricotta cheese
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook ziti according to package directions until al dente; drain and set aside.
  3. In a large skillet, cook ground beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until beef is browned and onion is tender. Drain excess fat.
  4. Stir in marinara sauce, oregano, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes.
  5. In a large bowl, combine cooked ziti, ricotta cheese, and half of the mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses.
  6. Spread half of the pasta mixture in the prepared baking dish. Top with half of the meat sauce. Repeat layers.
  7. Sprinkle remaining mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses on top.
  8. Bake uncovered for 30 minutes, or until bubbly and cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before serving. Garnish with parsley.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, omit the ground beef or substitute with plant-based crumbles. Leftovers reheat well and can be frozen for up to 3 months. Let the baked ziti rest before cutting for cleaner slices.
